5 quick checks to stop your website losing enquiries

Most small-business websites we look at in Altrincham and Manchester have at least one hidden problem. It’s rarely the design. It’s the little things that stop someone getting in touch.

If you think your website is losing enquiries, these five checks will usually show you why. Each one takes less than five minutes and you don’t need any technical know-how:

  1. Does your contact form actually arrive?
  2. Can people tap to call on a phone?
  3. Does it load in under three seconds?
  4. Are your prices clear?
  5. Can people book or ask in one click?
A website contact form sending an enquiry to an inbox, to check your website isn't losing enquiries

1. Does your contact form arrive?

Fill in your own form as if you were a customer, then check your inbox. Did it arrive? Did it go to junk? Is it going to someone who left two years ago?

Forms often break quietly after a hosting change or a plugin update, so nobody notices until the enquiries dry up. While you’re there, time how long it takes you to reply. A quick answer makes a strong first impression.

2 and 3. Is it quick and easy on a phone?

Tap to call. Most people will look at your website on their phone. Tap your phone number. Does it start a call or does nothing happen? Do the same with your email address.

Speed. Open your site on your phone using mobile data, not Wi-Fi. If it takes more than about three seconds to show anything useful, people start to leave. Large images are the usual cause and the easiest fix. Google’s free PageSpeed Insights will give you a score.

4 and 5. Is the next step obvious?

Clear prices. You don’t have to list every price, but a “from” price or a clear package tells people whether you’re in their budget before they ask. It also saves you time on enquiries that were never going to go ahead.

One click to get in touch. Count the clicks from your home page to contacting you. If it’s more than one, add a button at the top of every page, such as Call, Book or Get a quote. Make it the brightest thing on the screen.
